Company: Huntingdon Fusion Techniques Limited, , United States
Attn: Darren Sewell

Trailing shields for titanium and other reactive metal welding.

The affinity of hot titanium its alloys and other reactive metals, for gases such as oxygen nitrogen and hydrogen, means that inert gas shielding is essential during welding.

To assist welding, a range of trailing shields has been introduced by Huntingdon Fusion Techniques Limited .

When large components and structures are welded and it is not possible to put them into an argon enclosure, the welding torch can be equipped with one of the HFT shields to keep the welded joint and heat affected zone under an argon shield longer, allowing faster welding and minimising the risk of oxidation and hydrogen embrittlement.

Typical applications for Trailing Shields, include welding of all tube and pipe and cylindrical components, titanium and duplex pipes for onshore and offshore pipeline and riser applications, titanium components for racing car structures, stainless steel titanium and duplex tanks and vessels for the petrochemical industry, medical components and so on.

The shields are available for use with any diameter of pipe or vessel, radiused for welding either from the inside or outside and they are also available in flat format for welding sheet and plate.

Replaceable silicone rubber seals are used on the sides of the devices to prevent the shield gas from escaping.

Welds made with the HFT shields are all bright and shiny with no oxidation on the surface, with the shields protecting the molten weld pool, the solidified metal behind it and the heat affected zone to the side.

Each unit is delivered with an expanding clip to fit any size of GTAW or PAW torch whether for manual or mechanised welding.
