Company: Quaker Chemical Corporation, DE, United States
Attn: Amy Snyder

Conshohocken, PA, Quaker Chemicals Detroit plant, which manufactures the companys chemical specialty products, including metalworking fluids, coolants, steel rolling oils, process cleaners, corrosion preventives and hydraulic fluids, has been certified to ISO 14001 standards. The certification is required for many suppliers to automotive manufacturers such as Ford, Daimler Chrysler and General Motors.

The Detroit plant joins Quakers global operations in Spain and the Netherlands, as the companys third manufacturing plant to receive ISO 14001 certification.

Quakers ISO 14001 certification by a third-party auditor, demonstrates that the companys processes and activities that can affect the environment, conform to the standards requirement. As part of the certification process, Quaker established an environmental management system that is designed to protect the environment as well as the health and safety of employees, customers, suppliers and neighbors. Quaker will maintain its ISO 14001 status through ongoing site audits and programs to ensure that the company is making continual improvements in environmental performance, emergency planning, communicating and associate awareness.

In related news, Quaker announced that it has transferred its ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems registration to British Standards Institute (BSI) as of January 2002. BSIs global reach was a key factor in the decision to change registrars, as system and procedural consistency in Quakers operations worldwide is imperative to ensure reliable products and services for customers.

BSI is the number one registrar in North America as well as in the automotive sector, to which Quaker is a Tier 1 supplier. BSI performs audits for General Motors Quality Management (QMS) and Environmental Management Services (EMS); Quaker supplies Chemical Management Services (CMS) to many of the same sites. In these situations, consistent product and service quality can be ensured by BSIs ongoing site audit sampling, which eliminates the need for re-certification.

Currently, Quaker is ISO 9001 certified at 17 locations including the Netherlands, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, China, India and ten locations in the United States. Quaker has quality management systems in place at seven additional sites, and will add them to the list of sites registered to ISO 9001 certification in 2002.

ISO 9001 certification is the standard for quality management systems accepted around the world. Organizations that are certified to ISO standards have been checked by independent auditors to ensure that processes influencing quality (ISO 9001), or processes influencing the environment (ISO 14001), conform to the relevant standards requirements. For a company that has achieved this certification, there is an implied assurance for customers that the company is in control of the way it does things.

Quaker Chemical Corporation, headquartered in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, is a worldwide developer, producer and marketer of high-quality chemical specialty products and a provider of fluid management services for industrial customers in the steel, automotive and can industries around the globe.
